Trump vs Biden: what have they got to do with your marketing strategy?

Will the US presidential election ever end? Well, the transition has begun, so of course it will. But with #BidenCheated2020 followed by #crybabyTrump trending this week, there’s a lot to be said about the mass marketing effort from each opponent.

Both pouring millions of dollars into their respective marketing campaigns, flooding our Alexa news updates, Twitter feeds and TVs with adverts, interviews and down-right weird tweets in a bid to inspire voters, businesses can learn a thing or two from their perseverance…

It all comes down to your social media strategy

In the UK, our politicians spend months trying to convince us to vote for them, with similar tactics to our US neighbours — selling in what they promise and how they can make the country better. The only difference is, we vote, they count and ta-da, the next day, we have a new leader.

Now, we know America is different — it’s bigger for a start so runs on different timelines and deadlines — but would you believe that the polls opened back on November 3rd? That’s over six weeks ago, and the battle still rages on with social media posts like this popping up here, there and everywhere:

But what can business owners learn from this? Debate works.

Get people talking about you and your brand. OK, some folk might not jump on your brand’s bandwagon, but if you know your target audience inside out, they’ll be on your side. And those who don’t buy into your brand? You weren’t targeting them anyway.

Obviously, we’re not saying you have to be quite so contentious, but in a nutshell, create an emotional journey with your brand and encourage opinion — allow people to either like or dislike you, rather than just being indifferent or apathetic. Or worse, disinterested or uninspired. Think, Marmite. We all either love it or hate it — no one is on the fence.

As for Trump and Biden? Well, they couldn’t be more different — and their followers are the same. But, by understanding their target audience, their marketing campaigns allowed their voters to fully believe and trust in them. Which, according to Twitter, they still do.
